Directional Drilling
Installing underground utilities with horizontal directional drills - no open trench, minimal surface disruption across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
What Is Directional Drilling?
Directional drilling, also known as horizontal directional drilling (HDD), is a trenchless method of installing underground utilities using horizontal directional drills to bore a guided path beneath the surface and pull the product pipe back through - with no open trench along the alignment. Instead of excavating from above, HDD requires only small entry and exit pits at either end, making it ideal for installing watermains, conduit, and pipe beneath roads, railways, waterways, and developed areas with minimal surface disruption. It is a specialized discipline that demands the right equipment and experienced operators, and it is a core capability Pedre Contractors brings to complex projects across Langley, Metro Vancouver, Whistler, Vancouver Island, and Kelowna. We also install water mains and dry utility conduit using directional drilling where open cut is not practical.

When Is Directional Drilling the Right Method?
Directional drilling is the answer when open excavation is not practical: crossing under roads, highways, railways, or waterways that cannot be closed; protecting mature landscaping and established neighbourhoods where surface disruption must be minimized; or placing conduit and pipe beneath existing structures and sensitive areas. When traffic impacts, environmental permits, or restoration costs make open cut expensive or impossible, directional drilling keeps your Metro Vancouver project moving without the disruption of a full trench.
What Does a Directional Drilling Project Require?
Successful directional drilling starts with thorough investigation: geotechnical assessment, utility locating, and bore path design that accounts for soil conditions and existing infrastructure. Execution requires specialized drilling equipment, precise guidance and tracking systems, proper drilling fluid management, and crews who know how to respond when ground conditions change. After the pilot bore is completed and reamed to the required diameter, the product pipe is pulled back through the bore path in a single continuous operation. Pedre Contractors plans and self-performs directional drilling with the same safety-first culture and direct owner involvement we bring to every project.
